Don’t wish things were easier.
Don’t wish it was EASIER.
A short while ago, I was watching a seminar on YouTube by one of my favorite motivational speakers, Jim Rohn. At some point during the seminar, he said something that resonated deeply with me:
“Don’t wish it was EASIER, wish you were BETTER.“
The seminar lasted about an hour, and Jim shared many wonderful concepts, but this single line stood out: “Don’t wish it was EASIER, wish you were BETTER.“
How often do we look at the things we want to accomplish in life and get stuck thinking, “This is too difficult. I wish it were easier to…“? When we let that thought dominate, we diminish ourselves while making the challenge seem insurmountable—bigger than us.
As much as I love this line from Jim, I think it could benefit from a small adjustment. You see, I’m not a fan of wishing for things. I wrote about this in another article, but in short, wishing often implies a sense of powerlessness.
Here’s my take on it: “Don’t wish it was EASIER, be(come) BETTER.“
When we wish for something, we’ve already decided that we’re not capable of achieving it as we are. That’s why I prefer this shift in perspective. Instead of wishing to be better—still implying a gap in capability—embrace the idea of either being better (recognizing and using your existing skills) or becoming better (actively working to gain the skills and knowledge you need).
By choosing to be(come) better, you’re no longer at the mercy of circumstances. You’ve decided to take responsibility for your growth, and with that decision, you begin your journey toward becoming a more capable, empowered person.
In closing, let me remind you of this truth: nothing worth having comes easy.
Here’s to embracing challenges and becoming the best versions of ourselves.
